Eric Gill Engravings

What an unexpected surprise to find this sign in my local town, advertising Eric Gill engravings, a touring exhibition organised by Goldmark Gallery from Rutland.

For as long as I can remember Gill's work, particularly his stone carving, has been an inspiration.  His skill and scrupulous observance, precise, clean flowing lines and superb draughtsmanship are qualities I dream about achieving.

In I went to gaze at a master.

Some of the engravings were very small, so an even greater marvel, and they were beautifully mounted.  I went round twice!  Here are a couple of my favourites, though there was one called Swineherd, with three lovely pigs in it.

This one is called My Love among the Lilies - though they look a bit tulipy to me - adore the spotted robe.

  1. HI Jennifer, great to see another Gill fan. I was introduced to Gill's work years ago, when i did a two week work experience with a stone cutter, when i was about 15. I was blown away, mainly by the draughtsmanship and elegance of his work. His work still continues to inspire me, and was sad that i missed the Epstein,Gill exhibition in London last year. How fantastic to have this exhibition your doorstep. Thank you for sharing :-)

  2. You are right, there is such elegance and rythm. I must thank Goldmark Gallery for bringing the exhibition to Pickering. Their representative was very knowledgeable and helpful too. It is fantastic to see the original, in real life, of images you have only seen in books - it really made my day!

  3. Wow, I would have made a beeline for that one. I love Eric Gill's work. His carving is so rhythmic and sensuous and often a bit naughty..haha. It has a very contemporary feel to it too. I have his book Eric Gill: The Sculpture - A Catalogue Raisonne and it is wonderful.
